Matthew 7: 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because]narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
When keeping up with Joneses goes wrong? Verse 13 says many go by it meaning the narrow gate. Jesus also says in the same chapter (verse 22)
22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
There seems to be a connection with many here. The many in verse 13 seems like the wild bunch that probably were just on their way to destruction anyway and the many in verse 22 seemed like they had their stuff together. In all actuality they are one in the same. It is our responsibility to follow Christ and to know Him. If we simply live off of what is told about Him without seeking Him for ourselves then we look like the many in verse 13 in some degree. Well so and so is doing such and such then it must be okay for me to do such and such. Also by only performing religious acts without practicing righteousness puts us in the verse 22 many. We move from the way that seems right to the way that is right then we seek to follow Jesus Christ.
