3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Simply said. We should put on the mind of Christ and keep it on. Its not just being nice for a day but a lifestyle of thinking about others first. To appease the gasp moment this is considerably harder to do than say. When we live in a world that tells you to "express yourself" and "find yourself" then it is easy to see why the mind of Christ is the last thing on most people's mind. One of the reasons Christ came here to earth was to establish love demonstrated in the commandment of loving our neighbors as we love ourselves. The word "as" means to the same degree or amount or equally. *Gasp* but Let us also suffocate or take the air from "putting ourself on" and continue to walk or start to walk in the consideration and humility that Christ so warrants.
